British Museum

I have to confess that I am not a museum-lover kind of girl. Art galleries usually just bore me. Although I dutifully visit art museums, I find architectural art and historical artifacts in their original historical surroundings much more enjoyable. And yet, despite all that, I fell in love with the British Museum.

I love history and here, under one roof, I found many artifacts that are pictured in most history books.

Walking among the galleries of the museum, you observe the history of the world through the eyes of British colonization. Many of the artifacts ended up here because they were shipped to Britain at the time of a colonization of a particular country. As a result, the museum features prime treasures of each of Britain’s successful colonization campaigns, and the sheer number of those treasures is simply staggering.

On the one hand, it is sad that all those artifacts are missing from their original locations, but on the other hand, we might not have seen them at all had they not been rescued (or looted) by the British.

Anyway, regardless of the British Museum controversies, it is a wonderful place and has free admission. I visited it every single day while we were in London. I just decided to be honest with myself and skip all other museums because I wanted to enjoy this one thoroughly. Plus, it has a very nice cafe 🙂 (I mean the Gallery Cafe here).
